すっかり告知を忘れていました・・・。

すでに発売されちゃいましたが、10月21日にミリタリー・クラシックス71号が発売されました！

今回は前回に引き続きツェッペリン飛行船の後編です。

This is the second part of the Zeppelin Airship series.

初の敵国首都の爆撃に成功したツェッペリン飛行船はさらなる性能向上を目指し大型化していきます。

After the first successful bombing of the enemy's capital, the Zeppelin airship was enlarged to further improve its performance.

前編で登場したLZ38よりもさらに巨大なLZ112が今回の主人公です。

LZ112, which is even bigger than the LZ38 that appeared in the first part, is the protagonist this time around.

もちろんイギリス側も手をこまねいていたわけではありません。

ロンドンに飛来するドイツ軍機を撃退すべくイギリス軍も様々な対応を行っていきます。

映画『空軍大戦略』の下ごしらえがこの時に生まれたように見えます。

This looks like a prelude to the movie ”Battle of Britain”.

ツェッペリン飛行船の爆撃戦果は見た目のインパクトに比べればささやかなものだったのかも知れません。しかし、その衝撃がもたらした影響は大きかったようです。

The bombing results of the Zeppelin airships may have been modest compared to their apparent impact. However, the impact of the bombing seems to have been significant.

WW1後には「敵の主要都市を爆撃により破壊し、敵国民の戦意を挫く」という無差別爆撃論が生まれます。戦争を短期に終結させ、人的被害も総合的に少なく済ませることができる、と考えられました。

After WW1, the theory of indiscriminate bombing was born, "to destroy the enemy's major cities by bombing and frustrate the will of the enemy people to fight". It was thought to end the war in a short period of time, with less overall casualties.

WW2ではドレスデン空襲や東京空襲など大規模な空襲が実施されましたが、戦争の早期終結にはあまり貢献しなかったと考えられています。

WW2 saw major air raids such as the air raids on Dresden and Tokyo, but it is believed that they did not contribute much to the early end of the war.

(ドレスデン空襲では一夜に1000機の爆撃機が投入されました。)

(In the Dresden air raid, 1000 bombers were launched overnight.)

変化は軍事分野だけではありませんでした。

夜間に飛来する飛行船や爆撃機に対し、市民生活も変化します。

灯火管制、空襲警報、防空壕への避難など、戦争が日常生活に色濃く反映されていきます。

Change wasn't just in the military arena.

Citizens' lives will change with airships and bombers flying at night.

Wars will be strongly reflected in daily life, such as blackout control, air raid warnings, and evacuation to air raid shelters.

Many homes in the suburbs of London do not have basements, and air raid shelters as shown in the figure were created.

WW1のイギリスでは女性用の寝間着も変化したそうです。

夜間空襲の際に女性が着の身着のままで外に飛び出す事ができる寝間着。

In England at WW1, women's nightwear has also changed.

A nightwear that allows women to jump out with their clothes on during a night air raid.

いわゆるパジャマが登場したのもツェッペリン飛行船の影響の一つかもしれません。

The appearance of so-called pajamas may be one of the influences of the Zeppelin airship.
