Vacation on Planet Puree - BG WIPs

I'm currently working on the colors and the background art! I saved a ton of references from various anime like Outlaw Star and Tenchi Universe, including photos of fancy hot spring resorts from around the world. 

When it came down to coloring, I really wanted the backgrounds to have a similar look to "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!" with a bit more of a painted like feel. 

The first two images were my original attempt/practice to get close to that gouache and pen like look. The last two images are still shots from the first scene. I think I'm quite happy with the results!
