June Pinup Preview!
Sassy: "Hey Ruthie, you want anything from the vending machine? Ruthie??"
Here's a sneak peak Rough draft of the first artwork for June! ?
Adding more narrative to my work!
Lately I've been working my way up to more narrative driven artworks. Rather than just Sassy or some other girl standing or sitting around looking all sexy, like my past stuff, I'm trying to add little environment elements and posing cues to push some kind of simple narrative. Nothing wrong with cute girls just standing or sitting around looking sexy, but it gets a little repetitive on my end, and I assume it does for you all, too (I could be wrong).
Anyways, I've already got a few sketches in the works for future art that is way more narrative than previously, and I look forward to showing them off as they come!
A funny conflict of narrative I've noticed...
I've been ruminating on a funny conflict of narrative that I've noticed lately, considering the nude/non-nude format of my Patreon artworks. What I've noticed is that the more I try to create detailed and nuanced slice-of-life narratives, the less the nude/lewd versions make sense. Take the skateboarding curb grinding pinup from May, for example. The clothed version arguably doesn't have as much of the pinup vibe, while the nude versions seem completely out of place in terms of narrative... Haha whoops!
One of the reasons I originally started doing the nude/non-nude versions of each artwork (besides both enjoying NSFW and being generally indecisive on outfits) is because it's a useful way to get the most out of my work, in terms of marketing. I can post the SFW version on social media to draw attention to my Patreon, while still leaving the NSFW version as an exclusive, here. It works a lot better than censored or cropped images, since I can share low res "SFW" versions on my Twitter, DeviantArt, etc.
Now, personally, I've always just considered the nude versions of the slice-of-life type drawings to be non-canon, and really just for fun's sake. Like, why would Sassy be skating nude? Yeah, she's bold, but maybe not that bold... Others have offered the possible solution that it's an alternate universe "nudist Sassy", which is pretty hilarious, to be honest! XD
But as I build the world around Sassy, her friends, and her personality as well, this conflict of narrative seems to stand out more and more to me. I don't really have a solution, and I suppose at the end of the day, as long as it's not distracting or off-putting to you guys, then I'll keep doing it.
Of course, one solution is that I skip the slice-of-life themes when making art for Patreon and just stick with sexy themes. On a purely technical level, sticking to sexy themes would be a lot easier on me (more character focused and less environmental work), but also maybe a bit less interesting and a little repetitive? Maybe not, I'm not sure.
So, here's a question!
Is it weird/distracting/diminishing to see the nude versions with the slice of life themes? Would it be less weird/distracting/diminishing to just stick with sexy themes and settings where the nudity fits, and leave the slice-of-life art for extras outside of the promised Patreon pinups?
Anyways, I wanted to share where my head's at on the topic, and see if anyone else has thought about this, as I continue to try and improve my craft!
Disclaimer for the above artwork
This artwork is for June Patrons and won't be included in May's set. So stick around and remain pledged during June to get it! :)
