The tailor
I’m currently stuck on my couch with both legs in purple casts. Let me tell you, this is not how I imagined my week going.
For context, I’m a tailor, and my shop is my happy place. I love creating and altering garments for my clients, but I also like to keep my shop looking fresh and cozy. Recently, I found this beautiful fabric and decided I’d make custom curtains for the front window. They turned out perfect (not to brag), and I was so excited to hang them up.
Here’s where things went wrong. I grabbed a step stool to install the curtain rod. But the stool wasn’t high enough, so in my infinite wisdom, I decided to stack a sturdy box on top of it. I thought, “It’s fine, I’ll be careful.” Spoiler: it was not fine.
As I was balancing on my makeshift tower, holding the rod in one hand and trying to drill with the other, the box shifted. Before I could react, the whole thing toppled over, and I came crashing down. I landed on my feet, but the impact was so bad I felt an immediate sharp pain in both ankles. Turns out, I broke them both—yes, BOTH.
I had to call for help (thank you, sweet neighbor), and after a long night in the ER, I ended up with matching casts. My doctor said I’ll be out of commission for weeks, which is great when you’re self-employed. Now, I’m stuck sitting on my couch, trying to figure out how to sew with my legs propped up.
On the bright side, my clients have been super understanding, and a friend volunteered to hang the curtains for me. Lesson learned: don’t play acrobat when you’re not one. Also, invest in a proper ladder.
