One of the things I need to work into this dialogue is the concept that Balthius isn't terribly worried about the immediate impact of the fissure; it's not a structural problem. If anything, he's giving this task to Roshim because it's not terribly urgent, but something tedious that ought to be done at some point.
There's a later scene with Avalon where Roshim should say this explicitly, but perhaps I ought to drop that here as well
