Battle of the Atlantic - Convoy HG76 Fights Through
Convoy HG76 set sail from Gibraltar in December 1941 expecting a routine passage. Instead, it became a landmark clash in the Battle of the Atlantic. Hunted by U-boats and long-range bombers, the convoy faced relentless attacks in heavy seas. Escort Group Commander Frederick “Johnny” Walker led with aggressive, innovative anti-submarine tactics, backed by improved radar, Hedgehog mortars, and long-range air cover. Across five brutal days the escorts struck back—ramming, depth-charging, and destroying multiple U-boats. When HG76 finally reached British waters, it had done more than survive: it proved the Allies could seize the initiative in the Atlantic.
