Scrumpy Factory - Behind The Scenes + Bonus Audio
You can re-watch Scrumpy Factory here!
This video took place somewhere in the Soviet Country!
I chose this setting, because I wanted to make background as close as possible to what I usually saw outside my window and exaggerate it to make it look fun and very depressive!
Since I was born in a poor Russian city called Tolyatti (no, it's not Italian, but it's name actually connected to Italy), it wasn't too hard to replicate at least a half of it's vibe. I chose a small custom map, and I changed it's visuals entirely using a lot of props:
Sometimes scenebuild can be very useful, coz you can barely find pre-made maps like this.
You may be familiar with these two buildings I put on the background. I found them in a "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Prop Pack". This type of building is called "II-60" in real life, and for some reasons you can find them not only in "Chernobyl", but also in some other cities including Tolyatti, I literally had one behind the window of my room. I took these photos long ago:
It looks literally the same!
I just noticed - I used barbed wire fence for my video too. As I see - It was everywhere!
Since Half-Life 2 takes place in the same setting, some of the props was very useful for this video. Like signs, trash or the yellow car which is a "Moskvitch 412" in real life. I saw it everywhere back in 2000 year!
Here's more close-up screenshots of this scenebuild:
I don't think my video included this angle on the street, but I made it look good.
Barbed wire fence, painted tires buried under the ground, and orange Mid-autumn trees!
Someone stole the wheel of an "UAZ van". The sign on background says "БУДУЩЕЕ" which translates as "FUTURE". The bottom of a tree painted white (it protects trees from pests and insects somehow). This tree is also growing inside a huge tire! Maybe it is very old!
I'll skip to the end of the video just to show how I changed the background for the last few scenes: It's even more depressing now, leaves are already fell, someone stole the "БУДУЩЕЕ" sign. Yellow car was sent somewhere else. Creepy bottles are all around the scene. This screenshot actually makes me sad when I look at it. Like this is how my scenebuilds look like when I abandon them forever...
Here's few more photos that inspired me. I made them 2-3 month before I started making "Scrumpy Factory" video:
Looks random enough just to my liking, ha-ha!
This is why I put a tree inside of a tire! The tree itself was big enough, it was no longer a bush.
Scrumpy Factory
Just as I said in the description of this video, I had to make my own map for this whole part. I used "tc_hydro" as a base. Using "Hammer Editor" I deleted everything from the background, leaving only one big room. I cleaned it from the inside. It wasn't easy, but It was the best choice, since It was the way I imagined the insides of the factory. I also wanted to replicate this surreal vibe, something like Tim Burton made for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I decided to edit shapes of Scrumpy bottles in Blender:
Mushroom!
It was the right choice! As you can see this map is still empty on this screenshot.
This tunnel was also part of the map!
I left this room for myself.
Since it was the first time I used Cycled Pre-made Animations in Gmod (using default or custom TF2 Merc Animations), it was difficult to remember in which order I should load my Stop Motion Helper save-file. With the numbers - it was easier to return and load animation exactly in order!
Fun fact! There is a Spiderdemo on the background:
It's barely noticeable, but it's him!
Few scenes later - you can see - he never made it to the factory!
So the Yellow car became an ingredient for the Scrumpy? So as the Polish Cannon!
Willy Drunka is wearing the hat and a hair I edited in Blender just for the video!
I don't think people noticed, but it was the same Sniper from the Beginning:
Yes, he actually helped this Scout month later with the... Jarate jar ?
The whole video idea was very fresh, when I started working on it, but sadly this video showed me that most of the people never care about HOW I make my video. I remember, I was disappointed with it's views. It got less views than some of my previous videos that I put less effort and time into. But I know who care about how I make my videos: YOU!
So here's a little bonus!
BONUS:
Like for the previous Behind The Scenes post for "Full of Maggots" I prepared two audio files from Scrumpy Factory video. You can listen to this video without music, and listen only to music separately. Check the attached files!
Fun fact - when I showed the insides of Scrumpy Factory for the first time - I put an audio of a "Whale call". You can hear this creepy bass noise on the background right before "Everything in here is a bloody Scrumpy" voice line! I don't remember where I found out about this trick, but it worked perfectly, showing how big and beautiful this place is! It was boring without it!
Here is the way music looked in Vegas file:
It's simpler than music from "Full of Maggots", but somehow it mixed pretty well just by itself!
Thanks for your support!
