1985 ARTICLE (For Patrons Only!)

When I was working on the HUGO comic book series, I needed badly for it to sell more issues so I could make more than my $500 advance (even that isn't common anymore). The publisher, Fantagraphics, was grudging about promoting it, and it was getting scant notice in the comics press, so I wrote this article on my 'comics philosophy' for The Comics Journal.

At first, they offered to put a small illustration from it on the bottom of the cover. Then, they refused to do that; the reason being that "we don't push our own books like that." It appeared in issue #98. The punch line is they "forgot" to put it in the table of contents!! It was hidden.

Two issues later, Jaime Hernandez was the cover artist of  their celebratory hundredth issue.
