Mysteries of Sound: The Music of David Lynch

Making his return to the Farm is everyone's favorite ketamine therapist, Matt Baldwin. Our topic for this outing is a subject near and dear to both of us: the music of David Lynch.

Simply put, if you grew up in the 90s and were into anything remotely heavy or gothy, it was inevitable you had The Crow and Lost Highway soundtracks in your CD case (perhaps Spawn too --has there ever been a movie so bad with such a great soundtrack?). Virtually every professional musician I know as an adult has pointed to the Highway soundtrack as crucial to their musical development.

It was only as I got older that I began to grasp just how much Lynch has influenced my musical tastes. I was late to ethereal, dream pop, and dark ambient, only really starting to explore those genres in my 30s. But it clicked almost immediately and suspect this was in part to all the Julie Cruise I absorbed from binge watching Twin Peaks over the years. When The Return aired nearly a decade ago, I discovered the Chromatics and others. In my 40s, I fell in love with Peter Ivers after discovering him through his connection to Lynch.

Throughout his life, Lynch displayed a remarkably diverse taste in music. Further, he seems to have kept broadening his horizons practically up to the point of his death. He didn't start getting involved in making music till the 1980s, and only learned instruments in the 1990s as far as I can tell. Yet, much of his creative output in the twenty-first century was musical.

As such, music is clearly a crucial part of the Lynch legacy. Yet, it's also one of the least addressed aspects of his career. Hopefully this show will help broaden the discussion. As much as I may have grown to disdain Lynch the Man, I still have tremendous respect for Lynch the Artist and hope this will make for fitting and novel retrospective.
