About character design

So this isn't a post about Phantomland, but maybe this account should be for my art in general? In any case it's a free post so no worries if you're here just for Chie & pals. lol

Silja & Taru is a hobby project that I use as a dumping ground for fantasy ideas. It might become a comic someday but that's not a priority for now. Drawing the girls makes me happy, that's all...

Just for fun I compared my current designs with their previous iterations from three years ago. I feel like it highlights my developing taste but also some practical knowledge I've gained from drawing comics. TL;DR: Always keep it simple!!

To be fair, whether a character design is successful depends crucially on how well you know the character, since only from that knowledge you're able to pick up traits, themes and vibes you want to express. I inevitably understand my characters better now than three years ago hence the designs were somewhat easy to update.
