Tanko Bushi originates as a work song sung by coal miners at the Miike Coal Mine, which stretched across Fukuoka prefecture and Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu.
In the early Showa period, it was arranged into a folk song, and today it is one of the classic songs for Bon Odori.

The dance is simple to pick up, so try learning them and dance along at a Bon festival!

Lyrics:
The lyrics describe scenes of mining work and the lives of the people who lived around the coal mines. The famous opening line, “The moon has come out, the moon has come out,” refers to the moon shining over the worksite at night. The song humorously expresses both the tough physical labor and the spirit of the community that supported it.

Playing on Shamisen:
Tanko Bushi has a relaxed tempo, making it a great song for developing a solid sense of rhythm. It also has a slightly bouncing groove, so first try just practicing with Bachizuke to get used to the rhythm.

Musically, it uses bright Tsubo (major key). Let’s try playing while keeping that in mind!

成り立ち

炭坑節は、九州の福岡県・熊本県にまたがる三池炭鉱（みいけたんこう）で働いていた炭鉱労働者たちの労働歌が元になっています。昭和初期に民謡として整理され、現在は盆踊りの定番曲になりました。盆踊りもとても簡単な振りなのでぜひ覚えて盆踊りで流れてる際は一緒に踊ってみてほしいです！

歌詞の内容：
歌詞は炭鉱での作業や、そこで暮らす人々の様子を描いています。「月が出た出た、月が出た」という有名な歌い出しは、夜の作業現場を照らす月を表現しています。力仕事の大変さと、それを支える人々の暮らしや心意気がユーモラスに歌われています。

三味線で弾く魅力と技法：
炭坑節はテンポがゆったりしていて、しっかりしたリズム感を育てるのに最適です。また、少し跳ねるリズムなのでまずはバチ付けだけしてリズムに慣れましょう。音階としては明るいツボを使っています。ツボにも意識して弾いてみましょう！
