The Shining 1980

"Mr. Grady, you were the caretaker here. I recognize ya. I saw your picture in the newspapers. You, uh, chopped your wife and daughters up into little bits. And then you blew your brains out."

Not gonna lie, I nearly fell off my chair when I realised this film was released in the 80's. But logically thinking it makes sense (I'm old ?)

I remember picking up a random VHS from my brother's room and thinking, "mah, I'll watch that." Not having a clue as to what I was about to experience. The ominous music at the start set the tone immediately. Stanley Kubrick has a way of making the viewer extremely unsettled, even when nothing particularly shocking is happening on screen. Long shots of the hotel, quick edits, superior sound design, and Jack Nicholson occasionally breaking the 4th wall make this film something special and should be experienced by anyone who loves horror.

Now, I'm not much of a "big" reader, but I was intrigued to read the original source material (admittedly, it's been a while since I read this book). From memory, the ending was completely different, and we got more of an insight as to why Jack Torrance was the way he was. Stephen King is not shy about hating the movie adaptation. It must be hard seeing your baby changed into something else. But honestly, I enjoyed both very much.
