Switch Release Date: 16/11/2025 Price: Genre: RPG

I'll jot this down before I forget. No major spoilers regarding the main story.

I'm not sure what the general consensus is, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it myself ☺️

Honestly, I've played this more than Sword/Shield or Arceus.

I chose Wani-Noko ☺️

Initially, I was expecting content similar to Legends: Arceus, so I was a bit confused thinking ‘This isn't what I imagined’. But if you play it as a separate game, it's genuinely enjoyable.

Rather than a sequel to Legends: Arceus, it feels closer to a mainline Pokémon game with a changed battle system. Opinions will likely be quite divided between those who can switch between the two and those who can't.

The story is linear but substantial, with loads of side missions to get sidetracked by. I got sidetracked loads and took about 45 hours to clear it.

This game lacks Abilities and Eggs, meaning no Metamon breeding either.

As long as you have the money, you can change Individual Values, Nature, and even hold items.

And Effort Values can be maxed out easily too.

You can use a Pokémon you've caught in online battles within five minutes.

The tedious breeding mechanics from mainline Pokémon are largely gone.

Leader breeding and colour breeding remain, but that's more of a hobby now.

This is a point I want to praise immensely.

Hardcore players might find it lacking, but for casual players with limited time, it's incredibly welcome ☺️

The carried-over Boss Pokémon element.

Honestly, at first I thought, “Oh no, not another Boss Pokémon game...”

I worried that once Boss Pokémon appeared, all the Pokémon I'd raised so far would become obsolete...

But that wasn't the case at all. In battles, smaller Pokémon are far less likely to be targeted, and their agility makes them better at dodging attacks.

Boss Pokémon and regular Pokémon each have their pros and cons.

The issues seen in Arceus have been brilliantly resolved here.

And Pokémon battles are far more enjoyable than in the main series or Arceus.

The non-turn-based system keeps the pace lively, delivering an anime-like, live-action feel to the battles.

However, enemies are genuinely tough, so brute-forcing with levelled-up Pokémon can lead to easy losses due to type disadvantages.

Then there's the online battles – unexpectedly a four-player battle royale format.

I'd always disliked Pokémon's notoriously high-barrier online battles,

but this time, matches wrap up in about three minutes, and it's fun whether you win or lose.

While certain Pokémon hold advantages in battle, victory goes to whoever lands the final blow,

so you can experiment and make your favourite Pokémon shine.

I reached rank A using Pikachu and Magcargo.

It demands split-second decision-making, giving a real sense of competitive play.

I hit rank A rather quickly, so I did wish for more depth to sink my teeth into.

The real challenge begins at A rank – it's packed with hardcore players, so I couldn't win at all ?

So far, I've only managed first place in A three times.

Overall, I reckon it'll divide opinion quite strongly.

That's inevitable whenever something new comes along. Pokémon has stuck with turn-based battles for nearly 30 years, but it's clearly out of step with the times.

I'd love to see it develop further in this direction ?

If Legendaries appear in a field the size of Sun and Moon, I'd definitely play again.

If I had to voice a complaint, it's that some items require trading to complete the collection.

While Pokémon requiring trade evolutions are understandable, having multiple items obtainable only through trading is problematic. Especially when it involves the rather high hurdle of exchanging five trade-evolution Pokémon between players.

I managed with help from my Fanbox members, but it's a tough system for solo players.

I'm starting to fancy the DLC a bit too ?

Enjoyment Level: ★★★★★★★★★☆
