Before revelling in victory or grieving defeat, it’s best to check any dark corners nearby for empathrems. It’s really discouraging to have an emotional moment cut short by a blow to the face.

Dead Zone. Empathrems are extremely sensitive to the feelings of other creatures. Having evolved in a biological and emotional dead zone where their primary predators were shambling Undead devoid of feeling except for occasional flares of hunger and anger, empathrems’ senses adapted to catch these sudden surges of emotion at a distance. This powerful perception allows them to detect and avoid even the stealthiest predators, but comes at a cost. Exposure to the vast depth of emotion experienced by living creatures is like a tidal wave of stimulation to the delicate senses of an empathrem, resulting in violent panic. Humanoids, who are known for being passionate and expressive, will get pummeled by a plethora of panicked pigtails if they wander into a swarm of empathrems, unless they go out of their way to calm and clear their minds.

Sensational Hair. The tendrils of an empathrem’s body are actually thousands of individual prehensile antennae woven together, which empathrems use to detect nearby emotions and interact with the world around them. Each empathrem arranges its antennae in its own unique style, similar to hair, as a way to distinguish itself. These complex arrangements of antennae are often cited as the inspiration for prominent hairstylists and fashion designers in The Low. Beyond expression, the tendrils work as self defense; though each strand is fragile on its own, by balling its antennae up into a braided “fist,” an empathrem can deliver devastating punches to any threat.

Stoic Guardian. The Temperwood Stoics, an order of philosophers, monks, and scholars, use an empathrem as their symbol and mascot. As a rite of passage, new inductees are required to walk through the Grove of Fear, a woodland corridor full of both empathrems and emotional stimuli, maintaining a clear mind the entire time. One particular section lined with grotesque animal masks enchanted to scream at you is notorious for resulting in broken bones. Few make it out unbruised, and the spectacular failures are often hospitalised.
