[MW Pokemon] Zaptor Matriarch - CR 9 Large Beast - $10 Reward
“You can tell how close the herd is by counting the seconds after the boom. If the time is getting shorter, you can be sure they’re rapidly approaching your location.”
— Maren, Storm Chaser and Zaptor Breeder
Don’t be surprised to hear thunder echo across the blue skies of the Storm Savannah. A flock of zaptors is usually content to peacefully graze, but a single sand drake can instantly rile them up until a clear day sounds like a tempest-toting battlefield.
Wind Energy. Zaptors have evolved to accumulate static electricity as they run: the passage of air over their outspread wings, no longer used for flight, combined with the friction between the feathers of their muscular legs creates several coulombs of static charge. Long after a flock has traversed a prairie, their passage can be detected by the distinct taste of ozone in the air.
Carrying a Charge. The speed and size of a zaptor make it an ideal mount, but they’re difficult to tame as adults, regularly shocking and paralysing would-be riders. Aspiring breeders must either spend a fortune to buy eggs from an existing ranch or risk life and limb to retrieve one from the wild. For the latter endeavour, the best tactic is to immobilize the matriarch until her eggs can be snatched, but the technique still regularly results in permanent injury or death. Raising zaptors from chicks results in a much easier ride, and rubber saddles are a must.
The Matriarch. At the head of each herd is a matriarch, a female zaptor who is both larger and more aggressive than her flock. Whenever the herd feeds, the matriarch always gets the best and largest helping, contributing to her greater size. In exchange for the extra helpings at dinner, she acts as the primary defense for the entire group. Her wider wingspan generates more electricity than that of smaller zaptors, and her kick is strong enough to crush a lion’s skull. Any perceived threat—be it predator, breeder, or researcher—has to contend with the matriarch’s rage before pursuing its own goals.
