Pufferfish as Inspiration - Check the Process & File!

Once I found four interesting references to use as a base in terms of gesture and costume design, I needed inspiration from a non-related subject (animal, food, object, etc.) during the initial phase of the drawing. I chose the octopus and pufferfish because I could envision them in the character's shape. As you will see in the process, I integrated elements like the spines or tentacles into both large and small shapes, in the silhouette and inside the character, as well as in color and value patterns.

The process of choosing which aspect of the anatomy or costume to change is based on how you use triangles, circles, and squares from the inspiration reference to merge into the character. The simpler, the better. I suggest focusing first on large silhouette shapes and then on smaller shapes inside the silhouette. Go and try it; I'm sure you will find some interesting things.
