Getting That Anime Style from Luis Miguel ??

El Sol de México, Luis Miguel, is a Mexican singer very popular, specially back in the 80s when he was a teen-idol. Because I’ve been stuck with many songs from him but specially one called "La Incondicional", I thought it would be right just to make something fun of it, like if it was an animated version of his concert.

I know my Mexican and Latinos in general will enjoy this little take, but I truly did it because I think one must create out of the things one gets inspired by, you can call me a romantic but I’ve been vibing with this type of music for a while so why not doing something rare, like a painting of a capture screen from Youtube, I figure that would be strange enough to bring some sort of different perspective, sometimes the most simple takes are the most fun to do.

For this kind of artwork, getting the eyes right is the most important thing. I often don’t look at one single reference but several to help me understand the face shape a bit better. Luis Miguel looks a bit like a bird with big eyes, big sad eyes, a small curved nose and big mouth; plus the hair in this particular scene really nailed the animal look.

Because I wanted the frame to look like anime, I also checked some references from old-school animes to know the exact amount of detail the face needed. Usually those characters are very simple but well balanced, so I chose to put most of the detail in the shape of the eyes and a bit in the mouth.

I struggled a little bit with the lighting in this one because I did not want the shot to be as dark as reference, so I pushed a little bit more the space the highlight covered in order to create some sort of contrast with the tones within the character.

I also used plenty of effects on top of the artwork just to get that old school look, but I’ll let you check in deeper detail the file and process video next Friday, stay fresh and creative. Thank you for your support.
