Designing Olympus [SKETCHES]

M upcoming project Legends of Baba-Set will take place at the height of the Greek pantheon, with all the gods and goddesses (and maybe even monsters) from the myths I read when I was growing up. One of the things that intimidated me about starting this comic, however, was the prospect of having to design all those gods, creatures, and places.

I designed Aphrodite first, then later Hera and Athena for my Baba-Set pin-up. The throughline of these designs were decorative crystals that acted almost like glowing, floating crowns and tiaras for the beautiful goddesses. So when it came time to start designing the other gods, the question became -- how would they fit into this design system? How did I envision each god, in a way that would be recognizable but also fresh and unified with the rest?

Above you can check out some new pages that showcase not only Olympus but also nine of the gods themselves. I think they should all be fairly easy to identify if you're familiar with the Greek pantheon. None of these are final yet, but I'm off to a good start and having a lot of fun!
